Best Things to Do in Key Largo

Key Largo sits at the northernmost tip of the Florida Keys, a place where the mainland begins to loosen its grip and the rhythm of island life takes over. Known as the “Diving Capital of the World,” this tropical stretch is defined by clear turquoise waters, mangrove forests, and a laid-back atmosphere that feels far removed from the bustle of nearby Miami.

As I mentioned in my first post about Key Largo, the purpose of my visit to this island, that is the first and longest of the Florida Keys archipelago, was to attend a wedding. One year later, I am posting about this barrier island in perfect time to wish G and L a very happy first anniversary and many more to come.

My time in Key Largo was filled with wedding festivities, catching up with loved ones and several fantastic meals. (More on those in my next posts.)
One exception to those activities was a solo, morning kayaking excursion, which I recommend when you visit Key Largo. I paddled through the mangrove tunnels of John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, gliding across shallow, glassy water and appreciating the way the twisting and weaving tree roots formed natural sculptures.

Another activity that I recommend is sunset watching. I'll admit that's not considered an activity per se.
In Key Largo however, it is. So much so, that waterfront bars like this one actually have countdowns to the dazzling event and ...
... bands begin to play earlier in the evening, providing a soundtrack as nature transitions from activity to rest.

I've seen gorgeous sunsets all over the world, but I must say, there's something special about a Key Largo sunset.

As each day wound down, the sky became a canvas of shifting color with swaths of burnt orange, soft lavender, and deep crimson blending over the horizon.

Watching the sun dip behind the Florida Bay, with silhouettes of palm trees and gentle ripples on the water, would have been enchanting on any occasion, but it felt truly special to see this sight while celebrating the love and commitment of two extraordinary people.

Once again, I wish G and L a very happy anniversary. To everyone else reading this post, I encourage you to visit Key Largo and experience its magic for yourself.
In the words of James Taylor and the Zac Brown Band:
It might take you a couple weeks
To save for a trip down to the Keys
With all your friends from way back when
That's a tab I don't mind payin'
Lord knows land, luck and pickup trucks
And diamonds don't come cheap
Thank God, love and sunset are free
